Side Swings


Side swings are skills where the rope passes by our feet at the side of our body. Swings enable us to transition between other skills such as different crosses and wraps.


Crosses


Crosses form an integral part of freestyle jump rope. Here crosses are grouped by whether they happen around the torso, around the legs or on the ground.

 
 


Multiples


Multiples are where the rope makes two or more revolutions per one jump, either passing under the jumper’s feet or in a swing at their side. Multiples are described by how many revolutions or ‘unders’ they have, e.g. double under, triple under.

 


Releases


Releases are any skill where one or both handles leave the jumper’s hand(s), remain airbourne, and then are caught. This includes the famous mic release, as well as handle passes and floaters.


Direction Change


There are basic two ways a jumper can change direction from forwards to backwards and vice versa. The jumper can axially rotate their body whilst the rope continues moving in the same direction uninterrupted; they can also bring the rope to a complete stop (against the body or in the air) and reverse its direction (stall).


Wraps


Wraps are skills where the rope is wrapped around part of the jumper’s body, usually their wrist or ankle. These skills usually require a swing to unwrap, but can be exited without one. Turning or stalling is also a way of unwrapping a wrap.
